You, Me and The Bible

There’s You.

There’s Me.

And there’s the Bible.

You Believe the Bible. You Believe it is God‘s Word. You believe it is inspired, inerrant, infallible, and supernatural.

I don’t.

You believe the Bible is God’s divine road map.

I don’t.

You believe the Bible is God’s moral and ethical rulebook.

I don’t.

You believe the Bible gives us everything we need for this life.

I don’t.

You believe the Bible is truth.

I don’t.

You believe the Bible is the rule by which we are to measure all things.

I don’t.

You assume everyone thinks like you.

I don’t.

When you quote the Bible to me please remember what I have written here.

I am more than happy to talk to you about what the Bible text says.

I am more than happy to talk to you about theology.

But please remember this is an academic exercise for me.

I don’t have your belief about faith, God, the Holy Spirit and the afterlife.

What faith requires I do not have.

I am a permanent resident of Missouri.

What Do You Really Know About Atheism?

housemate_atheist

The Redheaded Skeptic writes:

In fact, come to think of it, everything I thought about atheists turned out to be wrong. Like the following:

  • They’re full of anger toward God. A lot of atheists do get angry about things, but not God. Instead, we tend to get frustrated over the way we’re treated by Christians and other groups with prejudices.
  • Everything is meaningless and hopeless, and there is a hole in their lives that only God can fill. On the contrary, everything is much more meaningful and brighter. Most atheists live lives full of meaning. There are those who don’t, but living a hopeless life is not limited to atheists. I know many Christians who are no less hopeful than some atheists.
  • They’re mostly angry, bitter, selfish, miserable people. Most of the atheists I have met are bright, funny, and easygoing. Of course, people are people and nobody is perfect, so there are a few that are angry, bitter, selfish, and/or miserable. But this hardly characterizes them all.
  • They have no morals. You don’t need the Bible for morals, I learned. Have you read some of the stuff that’s in there? Yikes! Atheists are less likely (both in actual numbers and percentages) to be in prison. And they tend to have better arguments for their morals because they are based on pragmatism, not “God’s making us do it that way.”
  • Their arguments are easily refuted. Well, if that were true, I wouldn’t be an atheist.
  • They weren’t true Christians, etc. For that, I am simply going to point you here. (Why say something that has already been said better than I could say it?
  • There is no community. Granted, the church community is more established, and that does seem to be the number one thing I hear when fellow de-converts list anything they miss about religion. But there is a wonderful, supportive community online. If you are a mother, consider joining Atheist Moms on Yahoo. I also love hanging around other blogs and Free Jinger forums (though not an atheist site, it’s a site where many women of several faiths, atheist included, get together and talk about the evils of fundamentalism), answering emails, and interacting with fellow atheist friends on Facebook. And actual communities are coming together. The Parenting Beyond Belief people are working on some of that, along with many other community freethinker groups, etc.
  • They want to kill babies (abortion), allow homosexuals to take over the country, and indoctrinate our kids with Darwinism. Not all atheists agree on any one issue. Except maybe evolution. I’ve met pro-life and anti-gay rights atheists, though granted, the latter tends to be pretty rare. I would hardly characterize it in that way, however.

How To Get Your Grown Children To Attend Church

breitbart.com reports:

ALCOA, Tenn. (AP) – The son of a well-known Alcoa pastor has taken out an order of protection against his father, claiming he was threatened with a gun during an argument at a church over his lack of church attendance. The order of protection was filed by 32-year-old Michael Louis Colquitt against 60-year-old Joe Colquitt, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

The younger man told police his father pulled out a handgun when they met at the church to discuss church attendance. He told officers his father pointed the gun at him and threatened to kill him, his wife and family…

mediatakeout.com reports:

A popular preacher from Tennessee is having a run in with the law – for assaulting and threatening to MURDER his son.

Here’s what popped off. The dad, a preacher named Joe Colquitt, who is well known in his town of Alcoa, TN, was upset that his 32 year old son Michael had been regularly missing Sunday service. So preacher Joe called Michael down to the church to try and convince him to change his ways.

Somehow, things went LEFT and the preacher ended up pulling out a gun and PISTOL WHIPPING his son inside the church. Here’s how the Blount County Daily Times is reporting it:

"(Michael) Colquitt stated (Joe) Colquitt pulled out a handgun and stated he would kill him, his wife and family," the report said. "(Michael) Colquitt stated (his father) was upset because he cussed him."

In the order of protection filed by Michael Colquitt — which was served to Joe Colquitt Tuesday – the allegations made by the younger man go one step further, as he claims his father "pulled out a gun and loaded it . . . he pointed it at me numerous times . . . he also punched me in my face."

When officers contacted Joe Colquitt, he reportedly admitted that he did pull out a handgun during the argument, but said he pointed it at the ceiling, not his son.

The pastor denied threatening his son’s wife and family, but said he told the 32-year-old that "because he cussed his father, God could kill his wife and family."

So the next time your adult children are lax in their Church attendance…

Call them over to the house

and whip out a

handgun

just like Jesus would have done.

Crappy Marijuana

azcentral.com reports:

The  (Arizona) Department of Public Safety says 743 pounds of marijuana was found inside the tank of a septic truck.

The bust occurred when a DPS officer pulled over the truck Wednesday on Interstate 19 near Tubac for an invalid license plate.

Authorities say the truck had suspicious markings and the driver – 24-year-old Leonard Salcido of Tucson – gave permission for a search.

When the officer opened the holding tank, authorities say he discovered the marijuana wrapped up in bales.

The DPS says the street value of the marijuana is estimated to be about $409,000.

Salcido was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of possession and transportation of marijuana.
